Douglaston, NY is located in Queens, a borough of New York City. You may have read about Queens and about the history of Douglaston, but what is the city really like personality wise? There is a distinctly suburban mood to the city. It is an upscale residential district with a variety of cultures, architectural styles and community events.

In the mid-1990s, it was one of the richest neighborhoods in the borough. The Douglas Manor area is the most exclusive part of the city, though there is also plenty of luxury around Northern Boulevard and along the LIE. Demographically speaking, the majority of residents are 45 or older. Most households are single-family homes.

When it comes to real estate, bigger is better. Most residents live in larger homes of five rooms or more. The rent is slightly higher in Douglaston than the state average and even nearby Little Neck. There are many low-rise apartments to rent as well as homes and apartments with garden complexes.

The area is definitely scenic, as the community is surrounded by the Long Island Sound on three different sides. The community certainly loves the outdoors, and has the golf courses, the parks and wetlands to show for it. The culture here is diverse and a great deal of the population actually immigrated from Europe.

Douglaston is friendly to small businesses and has a large population of private business owners. Some of the top stores include small restaurants, delis and dessert stops. The most urban area of the community is the Douglaston Plaza Shopping Center, which welcomes hundreds of people daily.

This moderately populated community (well over 14,000) does retain the charm of a close-knit community of friends and neighborhoods. Go and start investigating the six different neighborhoods that make up Douglaston: Doug Bay, Douglas Manor, Douglaston Hill, Douglaston Park, Winchester Estates and outer Douglaston. This is a great community to visit and call home!

Are you ready for some shopping in Douglaston, Queens? The Douglaston Plaza shopping center is one of the most important landmarks of the community and a staple for the local economy. The center is one of the most trafficked destinations in the area and a hub of shopping activity. Inside, visitors can find a Fairway Supermarket as well as a Toys R Us store. Other stores on-site include a Modell’s sports store, a Macy’s, a Burger King, a Starbucks, and a theater setup by Movieworld. Ashkenazy Acquisitions owns the plaza and most recently opened a Grimaldi’s store inside.

The geographic location of the plaza is nice; it’s on a hillside that overlooks the Cross Island Parkway. This mall is a small exterior location. Some visitors have stated that it can be difficult to walk between stores because of the distance, so bring along a friend and drive through the area. The plaza is conveniently located near the Long Island Expressway as well as Cross Island.

The mall is located at 242-02 61st Ave in Douglaston, Queens. If you want to contact mall management, call the number 718-225-4642. You can reach the mall through mass transit by way of Q30. What about the parking situation? Exterior parking only, but visitors can expect lots of available parking spots. This is a safe location and one of the most important destination spots for camera-ready tourists.

This is an upscale community so prices are standard for mall shopping. However, you simply must take home a few souvenirs for your trip. Why not bring back a collectible keychain or even a new wardrobe? There are also a variety of restaurants, delis, pizzerias and dessert stores within the main shopping region. You have to experience the shopping scene to truly appreciate the ambiance of Douglaston, NY!

While there is a quaint little movie theater in Douglaston called the Movieworld theater, we’re not talking about cinema features. Would you like to know the Hollywood history of your favorite community? First of all, know that this is a community full of talented people. Some of the most interesting screen actors have lived in Douglaston. This was once the home of Ginger Rogers, Angela Lansbury and chef Lidia Matticchio Bastianich. Other notable men and women to call Douglaston home include tennis players Mary Carillo, John McEnroe and Patrick McEnroe, as well as authors Harold McCracken and Shepherd Mead.

However, this is not just a community made famous by its residents. The look and mood of Douglaston is enough to land the community in a few cameo roles in Hollywood productions. Remember the pretty suburban hills and greenery in Little Children (starring Kate Winslet and Jackie Earle Haley)? Part of that film was shot in Douglaston. What about the opulent buildings in the Denzel Washington-Russell Crowe movie American Gangster? Another movie moment made possible by Douglaston.

Other films that were partially shot in Douglaston include Black Rain, The Arrangement, Cops and Robbers and After-Life. The upcoming film Rabbit Hole starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart was partly shot in Douglaston. The 2011 film “Son of No One” will also feature the community. Last but not least, the NBC TV comedy series 30 Rock used Douglaston as a community “double” for Needmore, Pennsylvania.

The character of the city is also important to entertainers. J.D. Salinger (Catcher in the Rye) used the community in his short story entitled “The Laughing Man.” Yes indeed, there is a great deal of personality in Douglaston, the ideal suburban landscape, perfectly situated in the vibrant Queens borough. Come see the community for yourself and come see what everyone else knows: Douglaston has a wonderful personality!

Douglaston, NY has some very old houses that will be of interest to tourists. The Landmarks Preservation Commission recently voted to make Douglas Manor the 70th historic district in New York City. It will also be the third historic district in Queens. There has been a concentrated effort to help save historical districts in their natural state, and with some assistance from the Historic Districts Council, Douglaston is now a safe area—protected from the rest of Queens, which is well known for new home development.

The original Douglas Manor was incorporated in the year 1906. This garden community was near the waterfront and also near many trees. The Douglas Yacht Club was built even before the manor in the early 1800s. According to recent polls, 80% of the residents in Douglaston approved the manor’s landmark status.

The Douglas Manor area, one of the neighborhoods of Douglaston, has strong character and is unlike any other place in the city (or even the entire state). It has a variety of old style houses, such as Tudor style, Colonial style and Mediterranean Revival. Many people enjoy the nostalgic and sometimes eerie feeling of touring old homes from past eras.

While Douglas Manor isn’t known to be haunted, there is plenty of Halloween activity around the greater Queens area. Sometimes haunted and historic tourism sometimes go together, and parents can’t complain, since haunted history is the only type of history kids go for these days! For haunted tourism, check out the Kingsland Homestead in Queens as well as the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.

Last but not least, bring the kids along to the Queens Farm Haunted House on Little Neck Parkway, Queens, NY 11426. Haunts, history and heritage—it’s all good. Come see Queens and Douglaston in October!

You have already read about the history of Douglaston and the wonderful architectural creations of this suburban community. However, where is the soul of Douglaston? Is this a good place to raise a family and commune with other people interested in doing the lord’s work?

Definitely! Douglaston may be upscale, but it still has many churches and close community activities happening year round. One of the most fascinating features of Douglaston is the Theater á la Cartè, which is a live theater show sponsored by the Douglaston Community Church. The show features the Douglaston Community Theater players who stage productions at the Zion Episcopal Church.

Another soulful attraction is the Immaculate Conception Center, which is owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. This event center is used for hosting Diocese events and other religious happenings such as language immersion school, ministry school, adult education seminarian teachings and civic conferences.

Children who are pursuing educational religious studies will take comfort in the St. Anastasia School, a private Catholic school that teaches children up until the eight grade level. Other listed churches in the Douglaston area include the St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic, the Church of Douglaston and the Eun Hae Presbyterian Church. There are also churches in nearby Little Neck, Queens, such as the Korean Joong Bu Church‎, the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints‎.

The nearest mosques are in Jamaica, including the Jamaica Muslim Center‎ and the Islamic Circle North America. There is also some mosques in Flushing, NY such as the Masjidi Hazrat Abubakr. Religious buildings of every sort are represented in Queens, NY.

Douglaston, NY is a place of fun, relaxation, commerce and also spiritual congregating. This is a complete community—one that you will be happy to raise your children in!
