Once you arrive in Douglaston, you will probably be overwhelmed by the activity. This small community still has a population of over 14,000 people. It encompasses six neighborhoods and is also part of the Queens borough. That means that foot traffic and road traffic are serious issues. Queens also carries the largest ethnic diversity of all NYC. If you don’t know where you’re going, you may quickly get lost and slightly flustered.
What options are there in Queens transportation? There are plenty of ways to get around in Queens and in Douglaston. Queens has a great transportation system set up, including taxis, subways and buses and trains. If you want to walk the community and beyond, plan for a long trip because Queens the borough is very large, and it’s easy to get lost.
Many residents of Douglaston are daily commuters to Manhattan and other parts of the city. One of the most common means of public transportation is the Douglaston Long Island Rail Road station. This station is located at 235th Street and 41st Avenue. It is right off the Douglaston Parkway area. You can get from the neighborhood to the Penn Station area in about a half hour.
If you would rather travel by bus then look for the Q12, which connects to the subway in Flushing or the Q30. This bus connects to the subway in the Jamaica area. Other bus lines include the QM5, which goes to East Manhattan, and the QM8, which goes downtown. The QM3, another express bus, leads directly to the East Side of Manhattan.
If you are traveling by car you certainly have your work cut out for you. Note that there are a few highways that pass through the community. These roads include the Long Island Expressway, the Grand Central Parkway and the Cross Island Parkway. Remember these landmarks as you plan your route.
